Se llevó a cabo la entrega de los AACTA Awards 2020 que reconocen la excelencia en la industria australiana de cine y televisión. La ópera prima de Shannon Murphy, “Babyteeth”, arrasó y se llevó nueve premios a casa.
La ceremonia se llevó a cabo con distanciamiento social en el casino The Star en Sydney. Russell Crowe, presidente de la Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA), estuvo presente a través de video para exhortar al gobierno australiano a continuar brindando apoyo a la industria del cine en Australia, país que logró controlar con buenos resultados la pandemia de COVID-19.
La gran triunfadora de la velada “Babyteeth” cuenta la historia de una adolescente con cáncer terminal que, para el horror de sus padres, se enamora de un vendedor de droga. El filme obtuvo los AACTA de Mejor Película, Mejor Dirección para Shannon Murphy, Mejor Actriz para Eliza Scanlen, Mejor Actor para Toby Wallace, Mejor Actriz de Reparto para Essie Davis, Mejor Actor de Reparto para Ben Mendelsohn, Mejor Guion para Rita Kalnejais, Mejor Score Original para Amanda Brown y Mejor Dirección de Casting para Kirsty McGregor y Stevie Ray.
“The Invisible Man” de Leigh Whannell y “True History of the Kelly Gang” de Justin Kurzel se repartieron triunfos en las categorías técnicas, mientras que “Standing Up for Sunny” de Steve Vidler ganó el AACTA a Mejor Película Independiente. Películas como “Relic” y “I Am Woman” se fueron sin victorias.
