Llegó el momento de conocer a las ganadoras de los Critics’ Choice Awards 2023, premios que están intentando adquirir mayor relevancia en la temporada.
Antes de proseguir, te debemos recordar que los Critics’ Choice Awards son, en general, una vergüenza, pues no están interesados en premiar al arte, sino en predecir los premios Oscar. A pesar de que se llaman “premios de la crítica”, su lista de nominadas no refleja exactamente a las favoritas de la crítica a lo largo de la temporada —de lo contrario, tendríamos a películas como “Happening” (99% en Rotten Tomatoes), “Girl Picture” (99% en RT), “No Bears” (100% en RT), “Saloum” (96% en RT), “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (en más categorías además de animación) y “Pearl” (aclamada por la actuación de Mia Goth) en contención.
Al igual que el año pasado, las nominaciones a estos Critics’ Choice 2023 no son las películas más aclamadas, más bien son prácticamente una calca de las películas favoritas en el sitio Gold Derby (sitio que pondera las probabilidades de contendientes al Oscar) al momento de votar por las nominaciones. Aquí puedes ver una prueba de este vergonzoso fenómeno que solo los Critics’ Choice tienen el descaro de hacer. Asimismo, no podemos olvidar cuando, en 2015, agregaron a “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” como onceava nominada en Mejor Película (a pesar de que ya se habían anunciado las nominaciones) simplemente porque pensaban que iba a ser nominada por la Academia. Como ya es tradición, la ceremonia de entrega de los Critics’ Choice 2023 fue terrible. Todo a las prisas, ganadores de la mitad de categorías se anunciaron con un gráfico, las presentaciones de nominados fue inconsistente, la última hora consistió en 40 minutos de comerciales y 20 de premios, y el pecado más vergonzoso: pusieron a un niño a presentar la categoría de Mejor Película Animada. Inaudito. Aparentemente lo mejor de la velada fueron los discursos de aceptación… lástima que no los pudimos escuchar en Latinoamérica porque HBO Max decidió forzarnos a escuchar sus pésimas traducciones al instante sin opción para escuchar la transmisión en inglés. Un desastre.
En fin, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” obtuvo Mejor Película, Dirección, Actor de Reparto, Edición y Guion Original en estos Critics’ Choice 2023. Por “TÁR”, Cate Blanchett obtuvo Mejor Actriz, mientras que Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) obtuvo Mejor Actor y, entre lágrimas, procedió a dar un discurso sumamente emotivo; aunque la importancia de los Critics’ Choice en la carrera al Oscar es mínima, discursos como el de Brendan, con corazón y la capacidad para hacerse virales, sí pueden ser cruciales para cambiar opiniones y atraer votantes.
Y por supuesto que hubo victorias cuestionables, de esas tan típicas de los Critics’ Choice. A pesar de que Stephanie Hsu y Kerry Condon han sido ampliamente aclamadas por LA CRÍTICA, no ganaron; en su lugar tuvimos a Angela Bassett consolidándose como favorita al Oscar por “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. Asimismo, “Women Talking” ganó Guion Adaptado, un indicador de que muchos votantes no vieron la película, mientras que “TÁR” obtuvo Mejor Score Original, a pesar de que la mayor parte de ese score… no es original (probablemente la votaron porque es la película más musical de las nominadas). Ah, Critics’ Choice, nunca fallas en fallar.
