Se dio a conocer la lista de nominaciones a los Critics Choice Documentary Awards 2023, misma que es encabezada por American Symphony de Matthew Heineman.
Los Critics Choice Awards son uno de los peores y más descarados premios de la industria, pues no están interesados en el arte, sino en predecir los Oscar. Su rama documental, que la propia asociación excluye de su “entrega principal”, no es diferente, pues aquí solemos encontrar a los documentales más populistas y una cantidad caótica de nominaciones, esto con el objetivo de tener más posibilidades de empatar con las selecciones de la Academia. También tienen el descaro de nominar conciertos que ni siquiera son documentales, todo con la intención de que la artista involucrada vaya a la ceremonia. La cereza en el pastel es que los premios son patrocinados por National Geographic (quienes tienen a varios documentales en la carrera).
Sin embargo, todo lo anterior no significa que sus nominaciones sean desechables, pues siempre encontramos mucha calidad en sus listas, además de que siempre es bueno reconocer a la no ficción en otros rubros poco premiados, como lo son su Fotografía y Score. Eso sí, no esperes ver muchas opciones internacionales.
Este año, American Symphony lidera con seis nominaciones: Mejor Documental, Dirección, Fotografía, Score, Edición y Documental Musical. Su director Matthew Heineman, quien nos tiene acostumbrados a arriesgar su vida, en esta ocasión nos trae una historia íntima y preciosa a través del seguimiento del multipremiado músico Jon Batiste.
Con cinco nominaciones encontramos a 20 Days in Mariupol, sobre la brutal invasión rusa a Ucrania; Kokomo City, sobre trabajadoras sexuales trans negras; y Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, inventivo filme sobre la carrera de Michael J. Fox y su lucha contra el Parkinson.
La memoria infinita de Maite Alberdi solo obtuvo dos nominaciones a los Critics Choice Documentary Awards 2023, pero lo hizo en las dos categorías principales: Documental y Dirección. Otras nominaciones destacadas son Orlando, My Political Biography en Documental Debut y Lakota Nation vs. United States en Mejor Documental Histórico.
