Se llevó a cabo la primera entrega fuerte de premios de la temporada: los Critics Choice Documentary Awards 2021, mismos que coronaron a “Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)” como Mejor Documental.
“Summer of Soul” es la ópera prima del músico y DJ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, y es una examinación del Harlem Cultural Festival de 1969, un histórico evento musical que contó con actos como Stevie Wonder, The 5th Dimension y Nina Simone, pero quedó sepultado por la historia.
Además de Mejor Documental, el filme de Questlove obtuvo Mejor Primer Documental, Edición, Documental de Archivo, Documental Musical y Dirección, premio que compartió con Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi y Jimmy Chin por “The Rescue”, filme sobre el rescate de un grupo de niños tailandeses en una cueva inundada que también ganó Mejor Fotografía y Score Original.
¿Podrá romperse la maldición de los Critics Choice Documentary Awards? Los cuatro últimos ganadores de Mejor Documental en estos galardones no han sido nominados al Oscar: “Dick Johnson is Dead”, “Apollo 11”, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” y “Jane”. No me sorprendería que “Summer of Soul” pase a formar parte de esta estadística dado que la mitad del filme es un concierto y la rama documentalista de la Academia suele ser muy internacional, es decir, no se dejan llevar fácilmente por películas aclamadas por estadounidenses.
