La Academia Británica anunció las nominaciones a los British Academy Film Awards o Premios BAFTA 2023, cuya entrega se llevará a cabo el 19 de febrero.
Qué lindo es ver cómo los BAFTA poco a poco empiezan a encontrar su propia identidad y alejarse de ser tristes predictores de los Oscar. Como hemos cubierto extensivamente en La Estatuilla, en los últimos años la Academia Británica se aseguró de crear un sistema de nominaciones mucho más justa e inclusiva que verdaderamente refleje el amor al arte.
Como resultado de lo anterior, en los últimos años hemos tenido geniales nominaciones como Audrey Diwan (“Happening”), Julia Ducournau (“Titane”) y Jasmila Žbanić (“Quo Vadis, Aida?”) en Mejor Dirección, el documental “Summer of Soul” en Mejor Edición, Stephen Graham (“Boiling Point”), Adeel Akhtar (“Ali & Ava”) y Adarsh Gourav (“The White Tiger”) en Mejor Actor, o Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”), Alfre Woodard (“Clemency”) y Joanna Scanlan (“After Love”) en Mejor Actriz; la victoria de esta última el año pasado es señal de cómo ha cambiado la Academia.
Habiendo dicho lo anterior, ¿qué pasó aquí? Aunque hay inclusiones muy buenas, las nominaciones a los BAFTA 2023 se sintieron como un ligero retroceso con respecto a ediciones anteriores, pues la Academia Británica (votantes y jurados) se decantaron por nombres populares y películas ya favoritas en la carrera.
La mayor tragedia es la exclusión casi total de “Aftersun” de Charlotte Wells, ausente en Película, Guion Original e, increíblemente, Dirección (énfasis en este rubro porque cuatro lugares fueron determinados por un jurado). Esto es aún más insultante si tomamos en cuenta que su guion quedó por debajo de la terriblemente superficial y vacía “Triangle of Sadness”. La industria es todavía muy blanca y privilegiada, y eso se nota en decisiones como esta. Asimismo, quedaron fuera “RRR”, “Saint Omer”, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” (de Guion Adaptado), Aimee Lou Wood (“Living”), Ben Whishaw (“Women Talking”) y “Moonage Daydream” (Edición).
Sin embargo, debemos destacar algunas nominaciones geniales como Park Chan-wook (“Decision to Leave”) y Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”) en Mejor Dirección, “The Guiet Girl” en Mejor Guion Adaptado, Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”) en Mejor Actor, Albrecht Schuch (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) en Mejor Actor de Reparto y “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” en Mejor Diseño de Producción. Sin embargo, como ya mencioné, fuera de eso encontramos —principalmente en categorías de actuación— a nombres populistas que ya son favoritxs en la temporada: la categoría de Actriz de Reparto es particularmente atroz.
En fin, “All Quiet on the Western Front” lidera las nominaciones al BAFTA 2023 con 14 impresionantes y merecidas menciones. Después tenemos a “The Banshees of Inisherin” y “Everything Everywhere All At Once” con 10, “Elvis” con 9 y “TÁR” con 5. “Top Gun: Maverick” solo tuvo 4 nominaciones y “The Fabelmans” casi se va de las manos vacías (tiene Guion Original): desde una perspectiva deportiva, es algo fascinante de cara a las nominaciones al Oscar.
